The church’s senior elder John Field told a congregation of about 200 people at the first service held in the new building that the move is the realisation of a dream which started 19 years ago when a small group was commissioned by Carreg Llwyd Church to “plant” a new daughter church to serve the expanding population of Eastern Oswestry .
They first started meeting each Sunday in a home in Cabin Lane , and when they became too big for the home they hired The Meadows School hall and in recent years held weekly services in the Eastern Oswestry Community Centre.
Mr Field said: “It has been quite an exciting journey for us with many challenges and setbacks. But the members have risen to the occasion and to have our own building with such wonderful facilities is the realisation of a dream.
“We believe in a great God and the power of prayer and the way this has all come about is testimony to this fact. The church is for His glory and to serve the people of this area.”
The ultra-modern looking two storey church has a 250 seater worship area, a modern café bar, training rooms, a children’s and youth hall and facilities for offering people advice on debt and families affected by drug or alcohol abuse. There is also planning permission for a sports hall to be built in the future alongside the church.
Because of its multi-purpose use they are calling it the “Whole Life Centre,” where Cabin Lane Church meets, Mr Field said: “We want it to be used for all ages, from mums and toddlers and youth, through to families and pensioners. It has been a long time coming for us to get such a purpose-built centre and we hope the people of the area will come to see for themselves all the uses that can be made of it.”
The new church will be officially opened in October by North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson, who after visiting the site while the church was being built, described it as “a brilliant scheme for the whole community”. It will also be dedicated on the same day.
Mr Field paid tribute to the builders Jones Brothers of Weston Rhyn. He said: “They have been so helpful through the long process and have shown such pride and craftsmanship in everything they have done.”
